Japan anticipates Indonesia will extend its Gas Contract Soon
Jan 05, 2007

During his Japan visit in November 2006, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave indications about Indonesia’s willingness to extend its gas contract that’ll expire in 2011 with Japan.

"We’re expectant that Indonesia will make a decision about extending its contract for supplying LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) to Japan", said Satoru Satoh - Japanese Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia on December 14, 2006.

Unwavering supply of Liquefied Natural Gas to Japan by Indonesia had been one of the very important reasons behind the good rapport that the two countries enjoy. Both the countries agreed to carry on the comprehensive co-operation in energy sector during a meeting of the leaders of Indonesia and Japan in November this year (2006), as per Satoru. Transferring the coal liquefaction technology, improving the efficiency of energy, and developing nuclear and bio energy are the main issues included by this co-operation.

Meanwhile, Purnomo Yusgiantoro – Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources in Indonesia - said that the contract would be extended if Japan increases its investments in the country (i.e. Indonesia).

As per a Research Analyst’s view at RNCOS, who is the author of the report on “Market Research on Asian LNG Market (2007)”, “It’s of great use for Indonesia to enhance its co-operation with Japan in this sector. Considering that alongside growth in its population and economy, energy demand in Indonesia will likely soar in the future.
