The US Wind energy industry is all set to mark another record year with the installation of about 7,500 MW, which has been possible due to rapid base expansion of the industry.

According to American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), as the wind energy industry of the US successfully installed 1,389 Megawatts (MW) in July to September 2008, this year will be another record year for the country’s wind energy sector.

The wind energy industry is likely to surpass the flag year of 2007, in which 5,249 MW were installed. It is expected that nearly 7,500 MW would be installed in 2008, from which enough electricity would be generated to power approximately 2.2 Million homes.

The major factor backing this growth in wind energy industry of the US is that the industry is vigorously expanding its base, producing more job opportunities and promoting investment and development, despite of adverse economic conditions. The market indicates that wind energy is one of the most promising energy alternatives available to the world.

Moreover, starting of eight new wind turbine component producing facilities in 2008, extension of nine facilities and the proposal of 19 additional facilities are expected to lead to phenomenal rise in the US wind energy industry.

Additionally, the use of domestic components in wind turbines has increased. Due to new projects, about 9,000 jobs are likely to be created. In other words, wind energy gives push to the economy, and solution for climate change and energy security.

However, this trend of growth is not expected to continue in the coming year. The wind energy sector is likely to remain comparatively strong in 2008 and 2009 due to the possible completion of some new under construction projects. But the commencement of new construction projects is likely to slowdown in 2009 due to the delayed extension of wind production tax credit and current financial crisis.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The US wind energy industry is growing rapidly with construction of several new energy production units in the country in 2008. However, the lack of investment and present economic crunch may retard growth in near future. Thus, the wind energy sector requires long-lasting plans to take complete advantage of its role in creating more job opportunities and stimulate economic progress.”
