The UK government gave its consent for constructing new generation nuclear plants that will help in reducing the country’s dependability on imported oil and gas and in meeting the energy requirements.
The Cabinet of the UK government gave green signal for constructing new age nuclear power plants on January 10, 2008. With the green signal from the government, Britain will start building nuclear energy plants for over a decade as one-fourth of the electricity generation capacity of the UK will stop working by 2015, as reported by Bloomberg.
The new nuclear power plants will help Britain to reduce its dependability on imported oil and gas. New plants are expected to fulfill more than 20% energy requirements of the country and will replace the ageing nuclear reactors. Renewable resources currently produce below 5% of the total electricity.
The energy industry of Britain has welcomed this decision of the government, as it will help in meeting targets of reducing carbon emission, global warming and securing energy supplies. The UK has decided to curtail carbon emission from current level to one-fourth by 2020.
Climate change and global warming are two biggest threats for the UK and the world. For global prosperity, human rights, peace, and justice, it is essential to deal with the problems. So cutting down carbon emission produced by burning fossil fuel in the energy sector is the necessity of the hour.
The nuclear power plants do not produce carbon dioxide, the main cause of global warming, and is far better than coal and gas-based power plants. However, environmental groups are opposing the construction of new nuclear plants as they want the country to produce big amount of energy from renewable resources.
Environmentalists have their own reasons for opposing the government plans. They think that the government has not addressed the issues of radiation leaks, dispose of nuclear waste and terrorist attack properly.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The number of nuclear power plant in the UK is very less. They are not enough to fulfill the burgeoning energy requirements of the country. So the government’s plans for constructing new plants will help in meeting the energy requirements. Of course there are many benefits of producing electricity through nuclear process but it will increase electricity bill because uranium is expensive rather other resources of generating electricity.”
