Thermal electricity generation touched a record high in April 2008 as demand increased due to rapid industrialization and growth in housing market.
The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said that the shortage of power in the month of April 2008 due to lesser power generation, reached the lowest level since 2003, by nuclear power utilities was offset by Japan’s 10 thermal power utilities generated record amount of electricity, as reported by IndiaTimes.
The industry association also revealed that power plants produced 75.39 Billion Kilowatt-hours electricity in April 2008, an increase of 0.5% compared to total production in April month last year. Thermal power plants generated 41.90 Billion Kilowatt-hours of electricity in April 2008, increased by 9.2% and compensated for lesser production by nuclear plants. In contrast, the power generated in March 2008 was around 83.49 Billion Kilowatt-hours, lesser by 0.5% in the same month last year.
With growth in the industrial sector in conjunction with construction of new homes, the power demand has tremendously increased, leading to higher power production in the country. New homes construction particularly increased the power demand in Japan. Besides, under performance by the power sector during March 2008 also boosted production in April 2008.
Additionally, the Japan’s power industry includes thermal plants that run on coal, oil and LNG that collectively escalated the power production during April 2008. Environmental concerns relating to green house effect and reduction in emission of carbon dioxide forcing Japanese electric power companies to replace coal and oil based plants with LNG fired plants that emit lesser amount of carbon dioxide and other pollutants, improving the quality of power production in the country.
Moreover, rising demand for power has created an urgency to enhance the efficiency of plants by installing combined cycle generating plants that are equipped with steam and gas turbines. Consequently, the percentage for the gross thermal efficiency has touched a record high. Besides, introduction of new and advanced technologies to enhance the capability of thermal power plants are also helping in increasing the power generation in the country.
According to a research analyst at RNCOS, “Increasing use of LNG thermal power utilities and lesser power generation by nuclear power plants has boosted thermal power generation in Japan. Rapid industrialization and construction of new homes together increased the thermal power generation in the country.”
